Quick answer: The best legal software for an advocate in Uttar Pradesh must work in Hindi as comfortably as in English, read scanned and handwritten Hindi FIRs, khataunis and orders, draft under the BNS and BNSS, track matters by CNR number across many district courts, and work on a phone between courtrooms. Juniorlawyer is built for this: Hindi OCR and translation, Hindi dictation, AI drafting for bail, notices and civil pleadings, CNR-based case tracking, and an Android app.

Uttar Pradesh has the largest population of any Indian state and one of the heaviest litigation loads in the country, running from the Allahabad High Court at Prayagraj and its Lucknow Bench to district and tehsil courts across 75 districts. This guide maps UP's courts, explains what UP practice demands from legal software, and gives a checklist for choosing one.

Bench jurisdiction decides where a writ or appeal is filed, so confirm whether a district falls under Prayagraj or the Lucknow Bench on the Allahabad High Court website before you file.

1. Hindi first, not Hindi as an afterthought

Hindi is the working language of most subordinate courts in Uttar Pradesh, and the use of Hindi is also permitted in the Allahabad High Court. FIRs, case diaries, khataunis, revenue orders and lower-court judgments usually arrive in Hindi, often as photographs or handwritten copies. Your software has to:

  • run OCR on scanned, photographed or handwritten Hindi papers,
  • translate Hindi to English for filings and briefs, and English to Hindi for clients and lower courts,
  • draft directly in Hindi when the forum expects it, and
  • let you dictate in Hindi when typing in Devanagari is slow.

Juniorlawyer does all four, and the app interface itself is available in Hindi. See our guides to Hindi OCR and translation and Hindi legal dictation.

2. The new criminal codes, applied correctly

Since 1 July 2024, regular bail is under Section 483 BNSS and anticipatory bail under Section 482 BNSS, while the inherent powers of the High Court sit in Section 528 BNSS. Offences committed before that date remain under the IPC, and proceedings pending on that date continue under the CrPC. Software that mixes these up produces petitions that need rework. Juniorlawyer drafts from the FIR and uses the code that applies to the matter. See our bail application format under the BNSS and the anticipatory bail format under Section 482 BNSS.

Anticipatory bail has a particular history in UP: the provision was omitted for the state in 1976 and restored by a state amendment in 2019. Older precedents on pre-arrest protection in UP should be read with that history in mind.

3. UP-specific law

UP matters regularly involve state statutes such as the UP Revenue Code, 2006, the UP Gangsters and Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act, 1986, the UP Regulation of Urban Premises Tenancy Act, 2021, and the UP amendments to the Indian Stamp Act. Good software lets you research these and draft around them. For land matters, see our land records guide on khasra, khatauni and mutation.

4. Case tracking across many courts

A Lucknow advocate may have matters at the Lucknow Bench, the district court and two magistrate courts in one week, while a Prayagraj advocate may also appear before the Board of Revenue. Juniorlawyer fetches case details by CNR number from eCourts data and keeps hearing dates in one diary. See tracking cases by CNR number.

5. Allahabad High Court formats

High Court filings follow the court's own rules on affidavits, indexes and annexures. Juniorlawyer's drafts follow Indian court structure, and our Allahabad High Court rules page collects the formats and filing notes in one place.

Hindi FIR to English: review before you draft

For a scanned Hindi FIR, case diary extract or khatauni, keep an unchanged original and save the extracted text separately. Compare the OCR output page by page before using it in a draft. Check names, father's names, dates, amounts, khasra and gata numbers, and section references, and mark anything that cannot be read reliably.

Correct extraction errors before translating. Review the English version against the Hindi source, with particular attention to who is alleged to have done what, the order of events and negative statements. Keep allegations separate from findings and preserve page references so a colleague can find the underlying passage. A working translation does not by itself meet a court's certification or filing requirements, so check those separately for the proceeding.

Without: a handwritten Hindi FIR arrives on WhatsApp at night. You retype it, translate the key passages by hand, look up the BNS sections, draft a bail application in Word, and check several eCourts pages for tomorrow's dates at the district court and the High Court.

With Juniorlawyer: upload the FIR photo, get Hindi text and an English translation, generate a first-draft bail application with the right BNSS provision, and see tomorrow's hearings for every court in one diary on your phone. You spend the saved time checking the draft and preparing arguments.
